According to Politics and Law Forum (PLF) Club President Jennifer Conner, "There's positive prospects that [this year's Forum] will likely happen. We're seeing forward progress on it."
University Relations and the PLF club, the main organizers of the forum, are doing their best to plan this major event after it failed to happen last year. They are encouraging more student involvement in the forum.
Speakers used to spend time on campus and interact with the Pacific community, giving students an opportunity to ask questions and further their knowledge on the chosen topic. In recent years, however, the forum has taken place off campus and the participants are scarcely seen at the university.
One of the university's largest annual events, the forum started out as student-run, but now includes University Relations due to its popularity and growth. It is a political event where well-known guests and speakers discuss a certain topic pertaining to current political events. The goal is to hear different viewpoints on the subject and engage discussion about relevant matters.
In addition to this, Conner explains, "It's a way to put Pacific's name out there."
The topic for 2010 has not been officially decided, but will most likely be the issue of either health care or sustainability. The date of the forum is also unsettled, but is planned for late February or early March.
Despite the lack of concrete details, the coordinators have great hopes that the Tom McCall Forum will once again be a part of the university's event calendar. "We're making progress and an event should be happening in some form," said Conner. "We just need to keep moving to get there."
