Well, here it is folks. The last drafted you'll ever see from me. It's been a good ride, and I'll miss being able to get drunk for homework. Now that we've got that out of the way, let's get to the beer.
This week I had a great opportunity: MacTarnahan's Oregon Honey, which we believe is being discontinued, was brought to me by my good friend and co-author of Drafted, Marissa. After getting all giddy, I grabbed the bottle from her and dashed away in a gleeful gallop. I ducked out where I wouldn't be bothered and could enjoy a hopefully fine example of a honey beer.
I remember having this beer before, granted I was drunk at the time, when everything tastes good. Unsure of what beer to buy, we elected for the Mac's Pack, a sampling of different beers offered by MacTarnahan's.
Way too excited for my own good, I found the nearest blunt object and pried off the bottle cap. As I took a big gulp of that sweet, sweet goodness, I was taken back to the simpler times; when getting drunk on a Tuesday night was acceptable, so long as you were awake for your 9:25 class. Unfortunately, that's all it really did for me.
I can't tell you why, but the honey taste doesn't really last. The first sip is pretty good, but the rest of the beer seems to lose its flavor as you drink it. It doesn't start to taste bad or anything. It just loses whatever it was that made it stand out.
On the upside it had a nice light-bodied feel that was easy to drink. If only for better flavor, I would be able to knock these back without any hesitation. The aroma is okay, too. Yes, just okay. I guess I was expecting a sweeter smell, but what was delivered was not impressive, just bland with a hint of honey.
All in all it's not too terrible, just not too interesting. On a scale of quirky scales used in previous issues of Drafted, from my scale of building heights in the world (1), to my scale of KISS members (10), I give MacTarnahan's Honey Beer a dinosaur scale (5).
