Triple-Jumper Allen Sets New Record at Oregon Twilight Meet
Issue date: 5/14/09 Section: Sports
Coming into Saturday's meet, Risa Allen (Sr., Portland, Ore.) needed an improvement of at least a foot to have a legitimate shot of securing a spot at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships.
She got the improvement she needed and more, smashing her season best and the school record in the triple jump at the Oregon Twilight at Hayward Field.
Allen finished third in a fielded loaded with Division I athletes with an effort of 38 feet, 9 inches. The mark not only betters her season best by over a foot and a half, but smashed her own school record of 37 feet, 10.5 inches, set during the 2008-09 season, and ranks as the sixth best mark ever in the history of the Northwest Conference.
On the Division III best list, Allen improved from the 35th best mark in the nation to 11th best in the nation, bolstering her NCAA Championships provisional qualifying mark and dramatically increasing her chances to enter next week's national meet in Marietta, Ohio.
Angie Miller (So., Alsea, Ore.), Pacific's only other competitor in the meet, did not improve on her season best in the long jump. Miller finished seventh with a mark of 17 feet, 4.25 inches.
Allen and Miller will have one last chance to improve their marks and chances for making it to the national meet as Pacific participates in the Willamette Last Chance Meet on Thursday in Salem.
