The chili morning did not keep a substantial crowd from accumulating in front of Old College Hall to hear the announcement of Pacific University's 17th president.
Just after 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, Dr. Lesley Hallick was welcomed with cheers and tears.
Her tears accumulated when she spoke of Pacific's noble history, she said she especially felt connected to that morning standing in front of such a historic building. And, when she was describing herself as a true advocate for education while looking at her 13-year-old grandson in the crowd.
"She's been passionate about academics my whole life … her whole life," said her daughter, Deborah Mundorff.
During her address to the community, Hallick shared five themes she said would be a "sneak peak" at her plans for the university.
1.) Listen 2.) Focus & Prioritization 3.) Vote with your feet (engagement) 4.) Partnerships, and 5.) Quality
"It's easy to say and it is hard to know when you've achieved it," she said about the fifth theme.
When she got the phone call just a few days earlier telling her she was being offered the position, Hallick says she was surprised, excited and overwhelmed.
"By the end of the phone call I knew what I was going to say, it was an easy decision," she said.
The more difficult decision for Hallick has been the debate over relocation to Forest Grove. She says she is very fond of her farm in Scappoose.
"I plan to live in Forest Grove and maybe escape to my farm," she said.
Hallick was very clear that she is ready to get started at Pacific but she says she theoretically doesn't begin work until Aug. 1.
Hallick will be succeeding President Phillip Creighton, who has served as Pacific President since 2003.
In his introduction for Lesley the morning of the announcement, Creighton explained that they had known each other for 11 years and referred to her as a good friend.
"Please extend to her the same support and generosity you have shown me," he asked of the crowd.
