First 'Phil Forum'

ALANA KANSAKU-SARMIENTO

Issue date: 10/19/07 Section: News
The Pacific Undergraduate Community Council teamed up with President Phil Creighton on Oct. 18 to host an open forum for students with questions and concerns regarding campus life.

Some students believed that the last minute advertising was not enough to make the campus aware and that the location was too inconspicuous for those who might have otherwise been interested.

PUCC acknowledged the lack of preparation, explaining that it was due to difficulty in setting a time that worked for both Creighton and PUCC.

There was a wide variety of questions asked. For example, one student asked if it was true that Creighton intends for Pacific to be an "ivy league school of the west coast." Creighton confirmed the truth to that statement, saying that he wants to continue to engender pride in Pacific University.

One program in particular that the President is planning on using to further Pacific's "ivy-mission" is called the "Hallmark Program."

Through the advancement and recognition of five or six Hallmark programs, the University hopes to become nationally recognized.

Such recognition is intended to raise the reputation of every other Pacific program, as well as the reputation of Pacific University itself, to a higher level.

The Hallmark programs may include such studies as environmental science, music, chemistry, business, and economics.

In addition, the issue of Pacific's tuition increase also surfaced.

When asked if tuition would be raised again within the next couple of years, Creighton definitively answered "yes," and went on to state that such an increase is to be expected.

One reason that Creighton gave for the tuition hike is that Pacific is "trying to stay in range with our competitors" while maintaining its value.

However, Creighton emphasized that Pacific currently remains below the average price for a comparable private university.

"We are a nonprofit university," said Creighton. "So every bit of tuition has to be spent. Money is channeled back to trying to make this a better university."
