Richard Gayle, a visiting professor of mathematics, has joined the Pacific University staff for the 2007-2008 school year.
He is visiting Forest Grove from a tenured position teaching mathematics at Black Hills State University in Spearfish, S.D.
"I'm interested in seeing how Pacific University runs and I'm here to exchange some ideas about teaching," said Gayle.
Although Black Hills and Pacific University are both liberal arts schools, they have their differences: Black Hills is larger, with an enrollment of around 4,000, and it is a public school.
"Already I have seen that students at Pacific are very focused and motivated. They have engaged in their work in the classroom energetically," said Gayle.
Gayle is at Pacific in a one-year position. He most likely will only be here for the year, but he said he may look to stay in Oregon because he enjoys living here.
His daughter and her mother both currently reside in Oregon.
When Gayle is not teaching, he is interested in many outdoor activities, including surfing, rock climbing and running. He has said he enjoys living in Oregon, as opportunities for outdoor adventuring are plentiful.
Gayle is also a graduate of the University of Oregon.
