David Cordes has joined Pacific University's faculty as a professor of chemistry. Originally from Queens, N.Y., Cordes graduated from Hunter College in 1990 with bachelor's of art in history.

He joins the university after spending several years working as a high school teacher where he taught English, science and history.

He then went on to work in the public health field where he said he became intrigued with chemistry, which lead him to pursue a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of California-Santa Cruz. He also conducted research at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory from 2005-07.

Cordes is very excited to begin his tenure here at Pacific where he hopes to foster a close relationship with his students and the university community at large.

"I hope to engage my students," Cordes said. "I want them to leave the classroom excited about science, with a heightened enthusiasm in chemistry and to provide them with a stimulating experience," Cordes added.

This is his first time in the Pacific Northwest and, despite the warnings from his friends about the wet winters in Oregon, Cordes is thrilled to be here. This is because he considers himself an avid outdoorsman who enjoys hiking, camping and skiing.

He is also a bass player and a fan of punk rock and pop music and he enjoys painting.

Cordes has moved to Forest Grove with his fiancée Suzanne, who works as a schoolteacher in the area.

They look forward to taking in all the thrills that the area has to offer mainly the music scene as a favorite pastime of theirs is going to local concerts and shows.
