Pacific handball has had good seasons during its 30-year history, but their second place finish at the 58th National Collegiate Handball Tournament in Houston, TX, crowned what coach Mike Steele called his most successful team ever. FOREST GROVE - It was a historic day in more ways than one for Pacific women's lacrosse Saturday as the Boxers won the first season opener in their four-year history and posted their first ever win over Puget Sound, 15-10, at Lincoln Park Stadium. While never trailing, the Boxers (1-0) did not put the game away until late by scoring six goals in the final seven minutes of play to pull away from a 9-9 tie.

FOREST GROVE - After being outscored by the Linfield Wildcats 21-3 in their first two games, Pacific baseball avoided the sweep and got their first home win of the Northwest Conference season on Sunday, 5-3, at Chuck Bafaro Stadium. Pitcher Jeff Bethke, whose three hits during Saturday's doubleheader were the bright spot for coach Greg Bradley's team, struck out six while allowing three runs on seven hits for the win.

It's not a done deal yet, but Pacific University and city officials are close to signing an agreement that will allow Boxer football to return to Forest Grove. City parks director Tom Gamble briefed city councilors on Monday on the status of the negotiations, which got a late start last year, after university trustees voted to revive the its Division III football program, which was scrapped in 1991.
