Read the full proposal to bring football back

The presentation of the proposal was made to the College of Arts and Sciences faculty last Thursday. We have posted the full five-page proposal, along with a spreadsheet breaking down the cost of starting up a program, how much revenue it will bring and how much it will cost students each year.

No Tom McCall this year

Pacific seniors who were looking forward to attending their last Tom McCall Forum as students this spring will now have to attend the event as alum as the event has officially been postponed until the academic year 2009-2010. In December The Pacific Index was told that the Forum was going to be altered and there would only be one speaker as opposed to the traditional two in order to accommodate a lower budget.

University entertains football proposal

If everything falls into place as it should, Pacific University will be fielding a football team in the fall of 2010. Ken Schumann, director of athletics, introduced a proposal to bring football back to Pacific University at the Feb. 5 College of Arts and Sciences faculty meeting.

The doctor is OUT. Creighton gone until March

Just months after announcing his retirement at the end of the year, Pacific University president Phil Creighton has gone on a three month sabbatical, as promised in his contract. "In my original contract with Pacific the (Board of Trustees) had a provision for me to have a three month sabbatical leave after five years of service," Creighton said, who is currently working on his sixth, and final, year.

After assuming her new role as Director of Alumni Relations at Pacific University in January 2009, Martha Calus-McLain considers her previous position as Interim Director of Alumni Relations as being an extensive interview for her new position. The search for a new Director of Alumni Relations began shortly after Brian Hess left the position in April 2008 to become the Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations at Pacific.

Campus to switch printing systems

On Feb. 14, the Forest Grove campus will be switching to a new pay-to-print system, known as Diablo. The new print server is more reliable and offers faster printing speeds. Many computers that are set up to print to the campus' Pharos (pay-to-print) system will need to be set up to access the new server.

Open Budget Forum set for Feb. 26

The Spring Open Budget Forum is scheduled for Feb. 26 during the noon hour in Taylor Auditorium. This is an opportunity for students, faculty and staff to learn about 2009/2010 proposed budgets as well as future financial projections. The information that the Budget Advisory Committee presents during the forum will then be sent to the Board of Trustees in March for review.

Kappa Delta Pi clothing drive to benefit students in area schools

Kappa Delta Pi is collecting new and gently used clothing to help homeless and disadvantaged students in the Forest Grove, Hillsboro and Beaverton school districts. The group is collecting "warm and fuzzy" clothing, including sweatshirts, new socks and underwear, jackets, outerwear and K-5 clothing.

University covers $80 Oregon Grant cut for students

Before disbursing the spring funds to its students, Pacific University decided to cover the reduction of the Oregon Opportunity grants for 2009. The Oregon Student Assistance Commission reduced the disbursements by $80 for full time students because more people were eligible than anticipated.

Pacific appoints alumnus Gary Pacarro to the Board of Trustees

As the number of Pacific students from Hawaii grows steadily at Pacific, Hawaiian resident and former student Gary Pacarro (1974) joins the group of prestigious men and women on the university's Board of Trustees. The university made the announcement in early February, making Picarro the newsest member of the Board and one of three representatives from the Aloha state.

Rhodes Trust paves way for graduates in Oxford, London

Since 1904, the Rhodes Trust has been funding students from the United States to receive anywhere from one to four years of quality education at Oxford University. Pacific University students wishing to study in London after receiving their undergraduate degree can apply in the fall, but preparation starts a season ahead.

High schoolers pick up the pace as scholarship competition begins

The time has come again; hundreds of high school students will populate our campus for two days in February during the annual Pacesetters Scholarship Competition, which will take place on Sunday, Feb. 15 and Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009. Talented high school seniors will prepare themselves for two days of a challenging competition and the opportunity of receiving a full ride scholarship.
